Last year, we had a wonderful wine tasting fundraiser where all the money raised went to our backpack project in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This year, we are following up with something a bit different − a Sri Lankan dinner and cooking demo, featuring cookbook author and gastronaut, Skiz Fernando. We are really excited to have Skiz take part in our fundraiser. Some of you may recognize him from the Sri Lanka episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations or his blog, Rice & Curry.
While the money raised for this event will still go to Sri Lanka, it will be for a different kind of project. Nanda, our main contact for projects in Sri Lanka, was contacted by the principal of a primary school in Bentota. The school has around 150 students (grades 1-5) and is in need of some assistance. The principal provided Nanda with a very specific wish list − equipment for a small playground, books for a library, musical instruments, and of course, the signature You Assist backpack filled with textbooks, supplies, and school uniforms. Every penny raised during the event will go towards fulfilling this wish list!
This event will take place Thursday, April 24 from 7-9 pm, so mark your calendars. The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Department at Stratford University (the Falls Church campus located near Tysons Corner) has graciously agreed to host and help out with the event. We will be serving a multi-course dinner of authentic Sri Lankan fare prepared by the Culinary Department and Skiz, using recipes from his cookbook Rice & Curry. The evening will also feature a cooking demo by Skiz as well as wine and cold beverages… and, of course, Sri Lankan beer.
There are only 40 available slots for this event, so make sure to sign up as soon as you can. TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT, CLICK HERE. If you encounter any problems with the link, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can’t wait to see you there!
